Euro-panic About Tariffs May Have Driven 7% Surge in Seaborne Imports in May

U.S. imports experienced a rebound in May with seaborne shipments having grown by 7% on a year earlier after a rise of just 1% in April. Deteriorating trade relations with China and the EU are a likely driver. Imports from the EU in particular surged 16% higher. China’s 3% rise likely reflects a “crisis as usual” attitude there. Underlying economic strength meant that most sectors saw an improvement. The exception was the automotive sector which saw a 2% drop, possibly reflecting weak sales.
