Global trade troughs in May as EU slump accelerates, China recovers

External trade between the EU and the rest of the world fell by 28.0% year over year in May, an acceleration from the 25.9% downturn seen in April after COVID-19 continued to take a toll on industrial activity. Trade with the U.K. remained weak with imports down 30.5% while exports to the world outside the EU having dropped by 29.7%. When taken alongside 37 countries tracked by Panjiva there was a 23.7% year over year slump in global exports in May, up from a 20.9% slide in April and marking the 10th straight drop.
