The Indian government may increase wheat import duties to 20% to 25% from 10% currently. That’s designed to encourage domestic planting after the October holidays. India has a relatively low reliance on food imports – they’re only 2% of the total – but did buy $1.5 billion of foreign wheat in the past 12 months. Most shipments are brought in by grain traders including Louis Dreyfus and Glencore, while sourcing is dominated by Australia (48%) and Ukraine (42%). The U.S. is under 1% of the total, suggesting room for a growth in exports as part of the comprehensive trade review program.
