Japan’s active pursuit of new trade deals should enable a continued trade boom. Combined exports and imports climb 13% in 2017 vs. 2016 to reach 154 trillion yen ($1.41 trillion). That’s only a return to 2015 levels though, so further growth is needed. The finalization of the EPA deal with Europe and CPTPP with 10 other countries including Mexico are tangible signs of such action. Exports to the CPTPP group climbed 15% in 2017, outpacing the 12% growth in all shipments, though the group currently only accounts for 11% of the total.
