U.S. trade price inflation has continued to accelerate with import prices excluding food and fuels rising by 2.9% year over year in February. That was the fastest rate of growth since the data series was started in January 2012 while the index level reached its highest since October 2014. That comes as supply chains were already facing higher freight rate inflation. The import price boom includes a 13.0% rise in base metal prices and a 6.4% increase in plastics prices.
