Container handling through the Port of Virginia fell 3% on a year earlier in April, due in large part to a 4% drop in imports. Given total year-to-date volumes have grown by just 1% it would appear the port’s long-term growth is at an end. The drop in imports was due to a 10% slide in shipments from China while shipments from the EU (the second largest export market to Virginia) also fell 2%. While there were no major service changes there was a consolidation of market power.
