Container handling through the Port of New York and New Jersey climbed 7% in June vs. a year earlier to set the second highest on record (after last August). Imports from China (including Hong Kong) led the way with a 24% surge in volumes likely resulting from a rush to beat duties on Chinese exports applied from July 6. Shipments from Europe rose by just 5%, suggesting underlying demand is modest.
