The automotive industry accounted for 7.9% of India’s exports in the first seven months of 2017, Panjiva data shows. The $9.99 billion of exports – including completed vehicles and parts, made it the second most important sector after apparel (15.1%) and just ahead of pharmaceuticals (4.5%). Exports were led by parts, including drivetrains, electrical systems and interiors, worth $4.5 billion, with completed passenger vehicles accounting for $3.5 billion. Motorcycles and commercial vehicles made up the remainder.

A geographic analysis shows it has a relatively low exposure to Asian and emerging markets. Indeed, Panjiva analysis of over 360 company-country pairs shows the largest shipping combinations are Volkswagen’s, Hyundai’s and General Motors’ sales to Mexico, followed by Ford’s shipments to Europe and South Africa.
